Sponges: From Caribbean Coral Reefs to Charleston Streams

Sponges: From Caribbean Coral Reefs to Charleston Streams In-Person

Sponges have successfully expanded across marine and freshwater habitats around the globe.

In this presentation, Dr. Chris Freeman, Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology, will discuss his research on key adaptations that sponges have for survival on Caribbean coral reefs. You will learn about how sponges are ravenous consumers of small organisms like bacteria and phytoplankton and how the ecological success of some species is linked to their evolutionary investment in microbial symbionts. He will also introduce his recent work on freshwater sponges in South Carolina and discoveries in local rivers, streams, and lakes near Charleston.

Free and open to the public; registration is required.

Box lunches will be provided to those who register by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19th

Those who don’t pre-register are still encouraged to attend.
