Black and Brown Interpreters Meetup - Domestic Slave Trade Tour

Black and Brown Interpreters Meetup - Domestic Slave Trade Tour In-Person

Join the Black and Brown Interpreters Network for a program with public historian, College of Charleston Adjunct Professor and former tour guide at the Old Slave Mart Museum, Lauren D'Avila.

As a part of her graduate research at the College of Charleston, Lauren uncovered the largest known slave auction in the United States in which 600 African men, women and children were sold at 24 Broad Street. During her tour we'll learn about this history of human trafficking and examine the few clues that reveal what Charleston was like in the 1800s when it was a prominent hub of the domestic slave trade.

The Black and Brown Interpreters Network is a group of natural and cultural history interpreters and tour guides based in the Lowcountry and beyond who are dedicated to service, education and professional development in the field of heritage interpretation. In 2024 we will meet monthly to learn from our fellow Black and Brown Interpreters and tour guides; network, share opportunities for continuing education and scholarships, explore local history and more. Our meetups are open to the community of Black and Brown people who identify as cultural/historical and natural history interpreters, tour guides and tour company owners; and/or Black and Brown people who have completed or plan to complete the National Association for Interpretation's Certified Interpretive Guide training course.
