Avery Research Center's Book Signing and Discussion for Another Sojourner Looking for Truth: Featuring Dr. Millicent E. Brown In-Person
Millicent E. Brown's childhood in Charleston, South Carolina, immersed her in civil rights activism, igniting a lifelong commitment to racial justice. She became known for her role as the plaintiff in a landmark 1963 court case that desegregated South Carolina's public schools. Brown's memoir, "Another Sojourner Looking for Truth," reflects on her quest for freedom in a nation filled with white supremacist beliefs and racial violence. Detailing her struggles as a teenager expected to challenge negative stereotypes of African Americans, Brown provides insights into the interpersonal dynamics of the civil rights movement and the challenges of confronting white backlash.
Beyond her academic career as a retired Associate Professor of History at Claflin University, Brown remains a tireless advocate for marginalized communities. Through her consultancy work with museums, historical sites, and community organizations, she continues to educate people about the ongoing fight for civil rights, urging society to confront the enduring realities of racial inequality.
